Members of the Azalea Coast Amateur Radio Club will be aboard the Battleship North Carolina on Thursday night. Using original radio gear from the 1940s, they plan to establish radio contact with the battleship USS Missouri, anchored at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, at 9 p.m. local time. Anchored in Tokyo harbor, the battleship Missouri was the site of the surrender ceremony on Sept. 2, 1945, formally ending hostilities. \"We have been in touch with the USS Missouri and we have set a schedule to communicate between the two ships when propagation is best,\" said Azalea Coast club member Charlie Vaughan. Some of the vintage radio equipment is on loan from an amateur radio operator in upstate New York, Vaughan said. Now preserved as a war memorial and floating museum on the Cape Fear River, the USS North Carolina was the first American battleship to enter Pearl Harbor after the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941. It participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific and earned 15 battle stars. ');

document.write(' Long before Facebook, email, cell phones and satellites, a select group of people were able to communicate across continents, often broadcasting from obscure locations using ham radios. By today\'s standards it may not seem too impressive. But what happens when the next big earthquake hits us?  When an unexpected disaster occurs, cell phone reception and email are often quick to fail. That is when we really start to appreciate people who know what to do in the event of an emergency: the professionals and amateurs who are prepared and can relay information. It\'s a good thing there are ham radio clubs like the Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association and the Cowichan Valley Amateur Radio Society, which have repeater antennas located on the Island. They have a worldwide radio web that predates the Internet by more than 50 years. These repeaters allow radio communication in places where there is no cell phone coverage, or if there is a problem with cell phone towers due to earthquakes, etc. During a disaster, ham radio associations set up portable self-powered stations at emergency gathering locations. Besides sending and receiving critical disaster relief information, they are also there to send and receive short messages between loved ones and friends all over the world. ');
